All Impersonating Officials

Impersonating officials is the offense of falsely claiming public office or its authority. In the United States, 18 U.S. Code section 912 punishes whoever falsely assumes or pretends to be an officer or employee acting under the authority of the United States, or of any department, agency or officer of it, and acts as such, or in that pretended character demands or obtains any money, paper, document or thing of value. The penalty is a fine or imprisonment of not more than three years, or both, so the wrong lies in the false claim to authority and not in what the impersonator then takes.
