Biosocial Criminology

Biological and Positivist Theories

An interdisciplinary field that explains crime and antisocial behavior through the interaction of biological factors, such as genetics, neurochemistry and brain structure, with social and environmental conditions, holding that neither dimension alone is sufficient to produce criminal behavior. The field is a modern revival of the biological criminology Cesare Lombroso pioneered in the 1870s, re-emerging from the 1980s onward after biological explanations of crime had fallen into disfavor for much of the twentieth century. Open Questions (1 open question)
In what year did biosocial criminology begin as a named modern field, distinct from Cesare Lombroso's original 1870s biological criminology, or in what year was the term itself first coined?

No freely accessible source states a specific founding year or coinage date. The Wikipedia article on the field discusses its modern revival only in general terms with no year attached. The Journal of Criminal Justice Education's 2022 history article, the most likely place such a year would be stated precisely, is paywalled (HTTP 403 on direct fetch, 2026-08-29). The predecessor depth wave (w-depth-crime-theories-0828) independently named C. Ray Jeffery's 1977 interdisciplinary-criminology work as the closest candidate but found no single fetchable source stating a precise founding year with a verbatim sentence to cite.

What would resolve this Access to the paywalled 2022 Journal of Criminal Justice Education history article (see the BlockedFetch row registered in this same file), or any other citable source giving a specific year for the field's modern naming or the coinage of the term "biosocial criminology".
