Contested confessions and convictions are cases in which confessions and identifications were later disputed. In the Amanda Knox case an Italian appeals court overturned on October 3, 2011 the murder conviction of the American exchange student in the 2007 killing of her British roommate Meredith Kercher in Perugia, after her 2009 conviction and 26-year sentence. The West Memphis Three were three Arkansas teenagers arrested in 1993 and convicted of the murders of three eight-year-old boys, two sentenced to death and one to life. In the Central Park jogger case the actual perpetrator, Matias Reyes, confessed in 2002 and DNA confirmed his involvement, which exonerated the five men convicted.
