Offenses concerning particular drugs are offenses whose definition is tied to a named substance or class. Fentanyl is an opioid like morphine or heroin, made entirely in laboratories, and even a small amount can cause a fatal overdose, including when it is added to counterfeit pills without the user knowing. Methamphetamine is a lab-made stimulant with high addiction potential, and it contributes to the overdose crisis alone or combined with fentanyl. Federal law also treats a controlled substance analogue, to the extent intended for human consumption, as a schedule I controlled substance, which lets prosecutors reach new variants of named drugs.
