Solitary Confinement

Corrections and Institutional Life

Solitary confinement is a form of imprisonment in which an incarcerated person is held in a single cell with little or no contact with other people. It functions as a punitive tool used within the prison system to discipline or separate people who are considered security risks to other prisoners or to staff, or who are judged to have violated facility rules or been disruptive. It is also sometimes used instead as a form of protective custody, separating an incarcerated person from the general population when their own safety is threatened by other prisoners, in order to prevent injury or death.
