Criminological Theorists and Social Scientists

Delbert S. Elliott is an American sociologist and distinguished professor emeritus at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he founded and directed the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence within the university's Institute of Behavioral Science. He created and directed the National Youth Survey, a major longitudinal study launched in 1976 that tracked American adolescents' delinquent behavior and attitudes over time, and his early work helped establish self-report measures of delinquency and an integrated theory of delinquent behavior combining strain, social control and social learning perspectives. He served as senior science editor of the 2001 Surgeon General's report Youth Violence and received the Public Health Service's Medallion for Distinguished Service the same year.
