Franz Gabriel Alexander (1891-1964) was a Hungarian-American psychoanalyst and physician regarded as one of the founders of both psychosomatic medicine and psychoanalytic criminology. With Hugo Staub he co-authored The Criminal, the Judge and the Public: A Psychological Analysis (1931), a psychological study of criminal behavior and the justice system, and he later co-authored Roots of Crime: Psychoanalytic Studies (1935, republished 1969) with William Healy, extending psychoanalytic theory to the understanding of criminal conduct.
