Marie-Andree Bertrand

Criminological Theorists and Social Scientists

Marie-Andree Bertrand was a French-Canadian criminologist, feminist and drug policy reformer who taught for decades at the University of Montreal School of Criminology after earning a doctorate in criminology at the University of California, Berkeley. Her scholarship examined the treatment of women in criminal justice systems and compared female criminality across countries, and she served as a commissioner on Canada's Le Dain Commission on non-medical drug use, arguing in a minority report for full cannabis legalization. She later led the International Antiprohibitionist League and was an outspoken advocate for prison abolition.
