Criminological Theorists and Social Scientists

Mark Albert Robert Kleiman (May 18, 1951 - July 21, 2019) was an American professor, author and blogger specializing in drug and criminal justice policy. He held a professorship in public policy at UCLA for 18 years before becoming director of the Crime and Justice Program at the Marron Institute of Urban Management at New York University in 2015, and he founded BOTEC Analysis LLC, a consultancy on crime, drug policy and urban development that advised Washington State and Canada as they developed legal adult-use cannabis markets. His books on drug policy reform include Marijuana: Costs of Abuse, Costs of Control (1989), Against Excess: Drug Policy for Results (1993), and Marijuana Legalization: What Everyone Needs to Know (2012). He died July 21, 2019, from complications following a kidney transplant, and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine now present the Mark Kleiman Innovation for Public Policy Memorial Lecture in his honor.
