Anthony Allan Braga, born 1969, is an American criminologist who serves as the Jerry Lee Professor of Criminology at the University of Pennsylvania and director of its Crime and Justice Policy Lab, having previously held senior research positions at Harvard University, Northeastern University, Rutgers University and the University of California, Berkeley. His research on gun violence and hot spots policing found that 74 percent of shootings were persistently concentrated in just 5 percent of street blocks over a twenty nine year period in Boston, and systematic reviews of his work show that concentrating police resources in crime hot spots can reduce crime without displacing it to nearby areas. He was instrumental in developing Operation Ceasefire during the 1990s Gun Project in Boston, a strategy combining law enforcement, community mobilization and social services to reduce serious violence, and his more recent research examines body worn cameras, procedurally just policing and racial disparities in police contacts; he currently serves on the federal monitor team overseeing New York City Police Department reforms to stop, frisk and trespass enforcement practices.
