Susanne Karstedt is a German-born criminologist who has held chairs in criminology at the University of Leeds and Keele University in the United Kingdom and now works at Griffith University in Australia, after earlier teaching at universities in her native Germany. Her research applies a comparative, international and cross-cultural lens to democracy, crime and justice, and in recent years has extended to mass atrocity crimes, state crimes, genocide and transitional justice, assessing what mainstream criminological theory can contribute to explaining and preventing large-scale atrocity. In 2007 the American Society of Criminology awarded her its Sellin-Glueck Award, given for introducing new perspectives on crime and justice from outside the United States.
