Gilbert Geis

Criminological Theorists and Social Scientists

Gilbert Lawrence Geis (1925-2012) was an American criminologist who spent his career at the University of California, Irvine, where he helped found the Department of Criminology, Law and Society within the School of Social Ecology. He became one of the leading scholars of white-collar and corporate crime, most notably through his analysis of the Heavy Electrical Equipment Antitrust Case of 1961, an early and influential case study of price-fixing among major American manufacturers. Over a career that produced 28 books and more than 500 articles and chapters, Geis served as president of the American Society of Criminology in 1976, received the society's Sutherland Award in 1985, and served on President Lyndon Johnson's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice.
