Terence Thornberry

Criminological Theorists and Social Scientists

Terence Patrick Thornberry is an American criminologist who has served since 2012 as Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland, after earlier posts at the University at Albany, where he was dean of the School of Criminal Justice from 1984 to 1988, and the University of Colorado Boulder. He is known for the interactional theory of delinquency he proposed in 1987, which combined Travis Hirschi's social bonding theory with Ronald Akers' social learning theory to explain how weakened bonds to conventional society and exposure to delinquent influences reinforce each other over an offender's development. Thornberry received the American Society of Criminology's Edwin H. Sutherland Award in 2008 for this body of work.
