Keystroke logging, commonly called keylogging or keyboard capturing, is the covert recording of the keys pressed on a keyboard so that the person typing is unaware their input is being monitored, carried out through either software or a hardware device. The logging programs themselves are legal and are often built for employers to oversee computer use, to monitor children, or to support law enforcement investigations, but keyloggers are most commonly used by criminals to steal passwords and other confidential information, which is what makes unauthorized keylogging a punishable offense.
