The World Health Organization has documented pharmaceutical counterfeiting as a global public-health threat that is especially severe in parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America with weaker pharmaceutical regulation and supply-chain oversight, contributing to treatment failure and drug resistance, most notably in documented cases involving counterfeit antimalarial and antibiotic medicines.
