Sham Marriage

A sham marriage, also called a fake marriage, is a marriage of convenience entered into without any intention of creating a genuine marital relationship, typically undertaken so one party can gain an immigration or other advantage. Definitions vary by jurisdiction, but the central test is whether the couple intends to live together in a real marital relationship; the United Kingdom's Home Office, for instance, defines it as a marriage with no subsisting relationship, dependency, or intent to live as spouses, entered into so one party can gain an immigration advantage. Although the marriage itself remains legally valid if it meets formal requirements, arranging or entering into one to deceive public officials is itself a criminal violation in some countries, including the United States.
