Insurance Fraud

Offenses in which a person deceives an insurance company to obtain a payment or benefit they are not legitimately entitled to, including inflating or fabricating an ordinary claim and deliberately staging an event, such as a vehicle collision, specifically to generate a fraudulent claim. This group is kept separate from the broader consumer and financial-institution fraud groups because insurance fraud investigation, prosecution and its own specialized investigative units are organized around the insurance relationship specifically, a distinct victim and distinct detection method (claims pattern analysis) from an ordinary consumer scam or bank fraud.
