Over three weeks in October 2002, John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo carried out a series of coordinated shootings across the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area that came to be known as the D.C. sniper attacks, or the Beltway sniper attacks. A stolen Bushmaster .223-caliber rifle and its bipod were recovered from Muhammad's car at his arrest; ballistics testing later conclusively linked the seized rifle to eleven of the fourteen shootings, tying a single weapon to the whole spree. The investigation drew in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the U.S. Marshals Service, the FBI, the U.S. Secret Service and local police departments across the affected jurisdictions. Muhammad and Malvo were eventually identified after a fingerprint match linked crime scenes in different states, and were arrested asleep at a highway rest stop in Maryland after a motorist recognized their car from the widely publicized description.
