James Fyfe

James J. Fyfe (1942 to 2005) was an American criminologist and police administrator recognized as a leading authority on police use of force and police accountability. His research on deadly force was cited by the United States Supreme Court in its 1985 ruling in Tennessee v. Garner, which struck down policies letting officers shoot fleeing felons who posed no immediate danger. He served as an expert witness in more than five hundred cases involving police misconduct and use of force, and spent his final years as a distinguished professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
