Eliot Ness was an American law enforcement officer, active from the early twentieth century until his death in 1957, best known for leading the team of federal Prohibition agents nicknamed the Untouchables who investigated organized crime figure Al Capone in Chicago. He served as Chief Investigator of the Prohibition Bureau in Chicago and later as Director of Public Safety in Cleveland, Ohio. His posthumously published memoir, also titled The Untouchables, brought him lasting fame and inspired numerous film and television adaptations that shaped his enduring image as a crime fighter.
