Ray Whitrod

Raymond Wells Whitrod was an Australian police officer and criminologist, born April 16, 1915, in Adelaide, and died July 11, 2003, who served as a Royal Australian Air Force flight lieutenant in the Second World War before leading a succession of police organizations, including the Commonwealth Investigation Service, the newly formed Commonwealth Police Force, the Papua New Guinea police, and finally the Queensland Police from 1970 to 1976. He resigned as Queensland Police Commissioner in 1976 to protest what he saw as entrenched corruption, a stand later vindicated by the 1980s Fitzgerald Inquiry, which documented institutionalized corruption in the Queensland force during the same period. Whitrod also founded Australia's first Victims of Crime Service and helped establish victimology as a field of study in Australia.
