Frederic Hill (prison inspector)

Frederic Hill (1803 to 1896) was a British prison inspector and social reformer whose work reshaped prison administration in Scotland and England. As Scotland's prison inspector, he pushed for centralizing prison management under one directing authority, an effort that led to the Prisons (Scotland) Act 1839 and what has been described as a wholesale change in Scottish penal practice. He later inspected prisons in the north of England and North Wales, worked at the Post Office, and was active in campaigns for women's rights and the abolition of slavery.
