Lewis E. Lawes

Lewis Edward Lawes was an American prison warden and reform advocate who led Sing Sing Correctional Facility for 21 years, during which he oversaw the executions of 303 prisoners while also campaigning for improvements to the penal system. His book Twenty Thousand Years in Sing Sing became a cultural touchstone, adapted into films including a 1932 version starring Spencer Tracy and a 1940 version titled Castle on the Hudson starring John Garfield, and Lawes also narrated an NBC radio series based on the book from 1933 to 1939.
