Nelson Hungria (1891-1969) was a Brazilian professor of criminal law and criminology, lawyer and magistrate who helped shape modern Brazilian criminal jurisprudence. Born in Alem Paraiba, Minas Gerais, he served as a justice of Brazil's Supremo Tribunal Federal from 1951 to 1961 and participated in drafting the country's 1940 Penal Code and 1941 Code of Criminal Procedure. His nine volume Comentarios ao Codigo Penal became a foundational reference in Brazilian criminal law scholarship, and he taught at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where he had studied.
