Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department

Local and Municipal Police and Sheriff's Departments

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, generally known as the TMPD, is the prefectural police force of Tokyo Metropolis, Japan, established in 1874 and today the largest police force in the country, with more than 40,000 police officers and over 2,800 civilian staff. It is led by a Superintendent General appointed by the National Public Safety Commission with the approval of Japan's prime minister, and it administers its jurisdiction through ten divisions and 102 police stations covering the full range of ordinary policing, including traffic control, criminal investigation, organized crime control, community policing and public security. Its headquarters, an eighteen story wedge shaped building in the Kasumigaseki district of Chiyoda, sits opposite the Sakurada Gate of the Tokyo Imperial Palace. As Japan's largest prefectural police force by a wide margin, the TMPD functions as a full scale, comprehensive municipal and regional police organization for the capital, distinct from the National Police Agency, which coordinates but does not itself command Japan's prefectural forces.
