Improper use of a countersign is an offense under Article 101 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. It covers a person subject to military law who, in time of war, discloses the parole or countersign to a person not entitled to receive it, or who gives a person entitled to receive and use the parole or countersign a different one than the person was authorized and required to give. The offense may be punished by death or another punishment a court-martial directs.
