In United States military law, malingering is the offense under Article 83 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice of feigning illness, physical disablement, or mental derangement, or intentionally injuring oneself, for the purpose of avoiding work, duty, or service. It applies to any person subject to the code and covers both false claims of incapacity and deliberate self-harm undertaken with that specific intent. A person convicted of malingering is punished as a court-martial directs.
