Gendercide is the systematic killing of members of a specific gender. The term was coined by the American feminist Mary Anne Warren in her 1985 book Gendercide: The Implications of Sex Selection, which described it as the deliberate extermination of persons of a particular sex, choosing a gender-neutral word deliberately to distinguish the concept from terms such as femicide that name only female victims. The concept has been applied to gender-selective infanticide and feticide, honor killings motivated by gender identity or sexuality, and wartime massacres in which victims were targeted because of their sex.
