Brothel-Keeping

Brothel-keeping is the criminal offense of operating or maintaining an establishment where people engage in sexual activity with prostitutes, treated in many jurisdictions as a distinct violation from the act of prostitution itself. Under the 1949 United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others, signatory states agreed to ban brothels and procuring as offenses separate from prostitution by an individual, reflecting a broader legal pattern in which soliciting, pimping, and keeping a brothel are criminalized even where prostitution itself is not.
