ATM jackpotting is a method by which criminals steal cash directly from an automated teller machine without involving a bank customer's card or account. Attackers gain physical access to the machine, often through a small hole drilled in its casing, disconnect its internal hard drive and connect an external drive using an industrial endoscope, then trigger an internal button that reboots the machine under the control of the attacker's external device, forcing the ATM to dispense all of its stored cash. The technique is treated as a distinct security threat alongside other ATM-targeted crimes such as card skimming and explosive attacks on the machine itself.
