Property crime is a category of crime that targets private property rather than a person directly, and it includes offenses such as burglary, larceny, theft, motor vehicle theft, arson, shoplifting, and vandalism. These crimes are committed to obtain money, property, or some other benefit for the offender, sometimes through force or the threat of force, as in robbery or extortion. Property crimes fall into two broad groups, those that destroy property, such as arson or vandalism, and those that take it, such as robbery or embezzlement.
