Blasphemy, Heresy and Religious Offenses

Blasphemy and religious offenses are offenses of insulting a religion or breaking its rules. Pew Research Center found blasphemy laws on the books in 2019 in all five global regions it covered, 79 countries in all, including 18 in sub-Saharan Africa, 17 in the Asia-Pacific region, 14 in Europe and 12 in the Americas. Penalties varied widely from fines to prison sentences and in some cases lashings and execution, and in countries such as Afghanistan, Brunei, Iran, Mauritania, Nigeria, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia violations can carry the death penalty. New Zealand and Greece repealed their blasphemy laws in 2019.
