Document and language evidence covers disciplines that examine writing and language. Handwriting analysis is one of the common laboratory disciplines listed by the Department of Justice. In the Lindbergh kidnapping, the handwritten ransom notes were one of two streams of physical evidence at the heart of the case, and after Hauptmann's arrest investigators gathered conceded samples of his handwriting such as registration forms and letters, then dictated passages built from words in the ransom notes to obtain request samples for comparison.
