Non-Consensual Intimate Image Distribution

The sharing, publishing or threatening to publish a sexually explicit image or video of a person without their consent, most often an image originally shared or created within a private relationship and later distributed, typically online, after the relationship ends. Popularly known as revenge pornography, it emerged as a widely recognized distinct offense during the 2010s as smartphone photography and social media made both the creation and the mass distribution of such images far easier, prompting a wave of specific criminal statutes in the United States, the United Kingdom and elsewhere that did not previously exist. It is treated as distinct from voyeurism because the image is typically created consensually and the offense lies specifically in its later unauthorized distribution.
