Community supervision is supervised release in the community, chiefly parole and probation. Parole is the conditional release of prisoners before the full completion of their sentence, with parole officers checking terms such as curfews, limits on where a parolee may go, notice of any change of address and no illegal substances or new crimes, and a parole board decides eligibility, though prisoners have no right to parole. Probation is a sentence that lets a convicted defendant stay in the community under supervision instead of serving time in jail or prison, on conditions such as reporting to a probation officer, avoiding further offenses and completing community service, and a violation may lead to revocation.
