Art forgery is the creation and sale of works of art that are intentionally and falsely credited to another artist, usually one more famous or established than the actual creator. The practice can be highly lucrative given the premium the art market places on an authentic work by a recognized hand, but modern dating techniques and stylistic and material analysis have made forged works substantially easier to identify than in earlier eras.
