An American examiner of questioned documents who founded the discipline as a science in North America. His 1910 book Questioned Documents became the standard reference, his handwriting comparison testimony was crucial in the Lindbergh kidnapping trial, and he established the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners in 1942.
