John L. Hagan

Criminological Theorists and Social Scientists

John L. Hagan is a Canadian-American sociologist who holds the John D. MacArthur Professorship of Sociology and Law at Northwestern University and serves as a senior research fellow at the American Bar Foundation in Chicago. He is best known for developing power-control theory together with colleagues, a framework linking patriarchal authority within households to differing patterns of parental supervision of daughters and sons that helps explain the persistent gender gap in delinquency rates. He was a co-recipient of the Stockholm Prize in Criminology in 2009 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2017, and he founded and edited the Annual Review of Law and Social Science from 2005 to 2018.
