Michael Salter

Criminological Theorists and Social Scientists

Michael Salter is an associate professor of criminology at the University of New South Wales in Australia, where he directs Childlight UNSW and formerly presided over the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation. He earned his doctorate from UNSW in 2010 with a thesis on adult accounts of organised child sexual abuse in Australia, and his 2012 book Organized Sexual Abuse examined accounts of ritual sexual abuse and related sadistic torture. He also authored Crime, Justice and Social Media (2017), analyzing antisocial behavior on social media such as revenge pornography and harassment. In 2023 he published a landmark empirical study, funded by Westpac and co-designed with the Australian Federal Police and the Attorney-General's Department, on sexual attraction to minors among Australian men, described as the first such research conducted in Australia.
