Raimundo Nina Rodrigues was a Brazilian physician, forensic medicine specialist and ethnologist regarded as the founder of Brazilian criminal anthropology. Working from Salvador, Bahia, he built early standards for forensic medical practice in Brazil and produced dozens of studies spanning forensic medicine, anthropology, psychology and sociology, most notably Os Africanos no Brasil, a study that applied Cesare Lombroso's criminal anthropology to Brazil's Black population and is now recognized as scientifically flawed and racist in its framework. His parallel ethnographic documentation of Afro-Brazilian Candomble communities is separately valued as early urban ethnography, and a forensic medical institute in Salvador was named for him after his death.
