Animal Cruelty, Fighting and Baiting

Animal cruelty, fighting and baiting are offenses of making animals suffer or fight. Federal law in the United States makes it unlawful to knowingly sponsor or exhibit an animal in an animal fighting venture, to knowingly attend one, or to cause a person under 16 to attend, and also to sell, buy, possess, train, transport, deliver or receive an animal to take part in one. A separate statute, 18 U.S. Code section 48, makes it unlawful to knowingly create, sell, market, advertise, exchange or distribute an animal crush video, with up to seven years in prison, and exempts customary veterinary, agricultural and hunting practice and the slaughter of animals for food.
