Art crime investigators are investigators who specialized in recovering stolen art. Robert K. Wittman joined the FBI in 1988 and became the bureau's foremost investigative expert in art and cultural property crime, recovering more than 300 million dollars of stolen art and cultural property in a 20-year career, and in 2005 he helped create the FBI's rapid deployment Art Crime Team, the first of its kind. Charles Hill, known as Charley, was a Scotland Yard art sleuth who used disguise and a lifetime's knowledge of the art market's underworld to recover paintings including Vermeer's Lady Writing a Letter with Her Maid, stolen from an Irish stately home, and worked on the 1994 theft of Munch's The Scream from the National Gallery in Oslo.
