Historic and individual prisons are single prisons of lasting importance. Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia was a first-of-its-kind prison built to encourage penitence through the strict solitary confinement with labor known as the Pennsylvania System, in a radial plan by John Haviland with seven cellblocks around a central hub, and it admitted its first prisoner in 1829. It stood empty from 1971 until a task force of architects and preservationists helped halt its sale in 1988. San Quentin, now the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, is California's oldest correctional institution, tracing its origins to 1852, and its first inmates labored to build it while sleeping on the prison ship Waban.
