Wrongful conviction, exoneration and legal defense are concepts about convicting the innocent and the defenses and outcomes that follow. Forensic science helps exonerate innocent people as well as identify perpetrators. In the Central Park jogger case the actual perpetrator, Matias Reyes, confessed in 2002 and DNA evidence confirmed his involvement, which led to the exoneration of the five wrongfully convicted men, who later received settlements from the city and state. The insanity defense is a defense in which the defendant admits the action but asserts a lack of culpability based on mental illness, and it is classified as an affirmative defense rather than a partial defense.
