American Academy of Forensic Sciences

The American Academy of Forensic Sciences, commonly abbreviated AAFS, is a professional society for forensic science practitioners, founded in 1948 and headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with members drawn from more than 70 countries. Its stated mission is to advance science and its application to the legal system, promoting professionalism, integrity, competency, education, research and collaboration across the many disciplines that make up forensic science. The Academy is organized into specialized sections covering fields including anthropology, criminalistics, digital and multimedia sciences, engineering, jurisprudence, odontology, pathology and biology, psychiatry and behavioral science, questioned documents, and toxicology, and it has established affiliated bodies including the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission, which accredits collegiate forensic science programs, and the Academy Standards Board, which develops forensic science standards. It also publishes the peer reviewed Journal of Forensic Sciences through Wiley Blackwell, one of the field's principal scholarly publications.
