Victim and justice reform advocacy groups are nonprofit organizations that press for change in how crime and punishment are handled. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was established in 1984 as a private nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, funded in part by federal grants, and runs a national 24-hour toll-free call center for reports of child sexual exploitation and of missing children and manages the AMBER Alert Secondary Distribution Program. The Sentencing Project advocates for effective and humane responses to crime that minimize imprisonment and criminalization of youth and adults by promoting racial, ethnic, economic and gender justice, and works with advocates across the country to bring people serving excessive and unfair prison sentences home.
