HM Prison and Probation Service

His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service, commonly abbreviated HMPPS, is an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice responsible for managing prisons and probation services across England and Wales, established in 2004 under the earlier name National Offender Management Service and given its current name in April 2017. The agency oversees the supervision of offenders throughout their sentences, whether in custody or under community supervision, and manages the relationships between the government and both public sector and privately operated prisons, bringing custodial and probation functions together under a single organizational structure rather than administering them as fully separate services. Its two principal component parts are HM Prison Service, which runs the public sector prison estate, and the Probation Service, which supervises offenders serving community sentences or released from custody under license. Headquartered in London, HMPPS employs tens of thousands of staff and represents one of the largest correctional systems in Europe by the population it manages.
