The largest sheriff's department in the United States and the third largest local police agency, serving unincorporated Los Angeles County and dozens of contract cities with municipal police services, courthouse security and county jail operations. Founded in 1850, it is headquartered at the Hall of Justice in downtown Los Angeles. Its homicide bureau led the task force that identified and pursued the Night Stalker, Richard Ramirez, in 1985, working alongside the Los Angeles Police Department's own separate task force.
