The Federal Police, known in Brazilian Portuguese as the Policia Federal, is Brazil's principal federal law enforcement agency, established on 28 March 1944 as the Federal Department of Public Safety and given its current name in 1967. It investigates crimes against federal institutions, international drug trafficking, terrorism, cybercrime and organized crime, and also administers immigration and border control functions, giving it a broader mandate than a purely investigative federal police force. The agency operates with jurisdiction across the whole of Brazil's territory, organized through 27 regional superintendencies and around 95 local offices, and remains subordinate to Brazil's Ministry of Justice and Public Security. Its combination of criminal investigation with border and immigration authority makes it functionally comparable to a merger of roles several other countries divide between separate federal police and border agencies.
