The Drug Enforcement Administration, widely known as the DEA, is a United States federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Justice, established on 1 July 1973 to consolidate the country's federal drug enforcement efforts under a single agency. It is the lead agency for domestic enforcement of the Controlled Substances Act, investigating the manufacture, trafficking and distribution of illegal drugs within the United States, and it also conducts international operations against drug trafficking organizations in cooperation with foreign governments. Its jurisdiction overlaps with other federal agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Customs and Border Protection, with which it coordinates on drug related investigations that cross agency lines. The DEA also maintains its own intelligence division, which participates in the broader United States Intelligence Community while remaining within the DEA's own chain of command.
